When everything else changes

I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”

– Malachi 3:6 NASB

A popular recording artist recently won praise from a famed critic. Why? He had changed the lyrics on a song to reflect changing times. The critic described how society had changed since the song originally was released. Then this critic praises the rapper, and his song, in the context of condemning the Bible.

He said that, like the song, the Bible is “full of important messages, interrupted by occasionally terrible ones.” While praising the artist for changing with the times, the critic complained, “If only the Bible could be so easily updated.”

Many people criticize the Bible and Christianity because, in their mind, it doesn’t seem to be relevant. In fact, it seems dated, out of step, and irrelevant. Many simply decide to try to “update” the Bible to reflect their own personal perspective, their own desires and opinions.

The fact is that the world around us continually changes. Songs that seem relevant quickly can lose their popularity. Today’s hits quickly can become distant memories. We see constant change in fashion and style. Humor and politics. Opinions and emotions. Politicians and entertainers may be popular one day but forgotten overnight.

Many want the Bible to be just like their music, constantly changing with the times. They want a religion that conforms to their transitory standards and personal interests.

However, the Bible makes it clear that everything around us may change, but God remains the same throughout all eternity. As He told Malachi, He does not change. And His Word and His standards do not change either: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). And “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Today, remember that you can anchor your life on God Himself. In a changing world, you can count on Him. His principles and principles always are true.
